APOLOGY TO NATURE

Artist Statement

My book began as a hike, taken over the course of 18 days, where I picked up trash and apologized to Nature for the harm we do to it. I read 63 books and hundreds of academic articles about the history of violence and why people are violent and concluded that the reasons we are violent to each other are the same reasons we are violent to Nature. The book is about acknowledging our violence and learning how to become aware of the conditions for violence so that we can be better partners to each other and Nature.

Review Of The Manuscript

In "Apology to Nature," author and environmental advocate Will Munroe embarks on a profoundly introspective and redemptive journey. This book is a heartfelt and compelling exploration of humanity's relationship with the environment, framed as an intimate partnership with nature itself. The narrative unfolds as a transcription of a remarkable 9-hour hike, a journey that was not only filmed but also served as a heartfelt apology to the natural world. As Will picks up trash along the way, they offer a poignant and sincere apology to nature for the ravages of human violence upon the environment. This act of atonement becomes a powerful metaphor for the collective impact of our actions. "Apology to Nature" delves deep into the root causes of human violence and its far-reaching consequences on the planet. Drawing from a rich tapestry of scholarly articles, books, and mythology, the book weaves together science, poetry, scholarship, and history. It is a thought-provoking exploration of why violence is often championed and how it manifests in our relationship with the natural world. Throughout the narrative, nature is portrayed not merely as an external entity but as an intimate partner, intricately linked to the human experience. This perspective allows Will to illuminate the profound interconnectedness between human violence and environmental degradation. Yet, "Apology to Nature" is not merely a lament; it is a journey towards healing and transformation. It challenges readers to confront the conditions that perpetuate violence and offers insights into how these conditions can be transformed into opportunities for love and renewal. The book inspires hope for a future where humans and nature coexist harmoniously, advocating for a shared responsibility to protect and preserve our planet. Will invites readers to join them on this introspective odyssey, fostering a deeper understanding of our role as stewards of the Earth. "Apology to Nature" is a call to action, a plea for forgiveness, and a passionate declaration of commitment to healing the wounds we have inflicted upon our intimate partner, nature.
